I’ve Suspected for Quite a While…

Spiritual Growth…FRUIT is the goal.  BUT sometimes it can be trickier than you might think!

I’ve suspected for quite a while that something is wrong.  I’ve worked on church staff for only a few years now.  But I’ve seen the same thing over and over again.  How can we grow BIGGER?  Don’t get me wrong, increasing in numbers is a part of any healthy New Testament Church.  BUT is it ALL we should be talking about?

I’ve worked with churches who are unwilling to travel the hard, slow path of spiritual growth.  Instead they want a PROCESS that can generate NUMBERS.  It makes me laugh, and sometimes grieve, when I think about the way we try to mass produce spiritual growth.  You would think we were making PEEPS  or some other consumable item.

Churches these days talk all the time about CUSTOMERS, MARKETING, ADVERTISING, METRICS, CUSTOMER SATISFACTION, & EVEN SALES.  They think of adding new members as if they are closing a sale.

What if we began to measure spiritual growth, not just in numbers but in other areas…anger, patience, justice, self-control, lust, greed, etc.

An article in ChristianityToday caught my attention.  Dallas Willard talks about this very topic.  Check it out (below).  You may be interested in looking further into some of the Spiritual Growth Assessment tools that he mentions toward the end of the article.  One is called MONVEE – I’m going to check it out myself.  I’ll let you know what I find!
