Pray 12 minutes each day

A few weeks back I challenged the folks at Green Hills to pray 12 minutes every day.  Sounds kind of funny, but here is my strategy.  You’ve probably heard the old acrostic A.C.T.S. (stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, & Supplication).  I challenged our congregation to pray through this acrostic spending 3 minutes on each word.  Totaling in 12 minutes of prayer each day.

Here’s my problem with prayer.  For so much of my life I haven’t had a real strategy.  Don’t get me wrong, I have prayer lists in my Bible and do a lot of praying.  I’ve tried to incorporate prayer into my quiet time in the mornings.  But it seems like my prayer life is a bit of a roller coaster.  Sometimes busy, other times slow but most of the time feeling unsuccessful.

I like having a more definite strategy and have learned several things over these few short weeks:

  1. I’ve learned how little I actually pray.  Timing myself and forcing myself to spend a set amount of time in prayer is actually good training.  This forces me to spend time in areas (like confession) that I might usually run through quickly or glance over all together.  Spending time in these categories causes me to be imaginative in my prayer.
  2. Adoration causes me to realize God’s greatness & power, inspiring me to dream, pray, and take steps of faith that i wouldn’t normally take.
  3. Confession humbles me and reminds me of how far I have to go in becoming like Christ and actually living as He would live if He were in my place, right here in Nashville, TN.
  4. Thanksgiving brings a centering type of affect on my heart allowing me to rest, be at peace, and be grateful.  Prayers of thanksgiving enable me to be grateful in the moment, not always looking to the moment that might come next!
  5. Finally supplication is at the end for a reason.  I am finally able to focus on someone other than me.  It’s so refreshing to spend time with the Father but to pray on the behalf of others.
  6. When it’s all said and done I walk away more certain about my mission.  The goal is that one day I can write about spending 1440 minutes in prayer.  And that talking with my father would become as natural as taking a breath of air in.  But for now, I’ll practice by beginning with 12 minutes a day and seeing where the wind of the Spirit takes me!
